The water pollution cycle
Oil travels further than most people realise.
Engine oil spills do not stay in the workshop or on the driveway. The path from oil pan to waterway is short: road surface → stormwater drains → streams and rivers → groundwater.
The figures are significant: just 3.8 litres of engine oil — roughly one oil change — can contaminate 3.8 million litres of water. In the US alone, 684 million litres of used motor oil is unaccounted for every year.
The risk increases with the frequency of oil changes. High-volume workshop environments with rapid service turnaround face a proportionally higher risk of a drain-point incident leading to oil loss.

Cr6-free coating
The black oxidised coating replaces standard zinc plating, which commonly contains hexavalent chromium (Cr6) — a hazardous substance under multiple environmental frameworks. SMART-O® is Cr6-free and recyclable.
Reusable by design
The plug body is reusable across services, provided the O-ring remains intact. Only the metal service washer requires replacement at each oil change — reducing component waste.
Green oil change pathway
SMART-O® can sit alongside recycled oil, long-life oil filters and responsible disposal practices as part of a complete green oil change programme for workshops.

Cr6-free, ISO/TS-certified manufacture and a reusable plug system are all documentable. Any additional environmental claims should be connected to technical data before publication.
